A Revue

In a Revue, Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe stages a retro-futuristic cabaret with scifi allure. We are in the year 4020, a year where only the sound of the earth falling down in crumbling dust can be heard, the year when aliens, androids and half-humans will find scores under the roots of the last remaining ancient trees. Totally puzzled but uplifted by cluelessness, they decide to have a cabaret evening with what they have found. What does the ancient music of the future sound like? How will they interpret the fragments and broken bits of the past? And are opera and ballet a faint memory or a final straw in the search for lost emotions? Meirhaeghe explores these and other questions with a hybrid cast of 17 singers, instrumentalists, producers, performers dancers and visual artists. They take the audience through an intriguing world where time is dissolved and all genre and gender divides fall. Like future earthlings, they dig into the past, groping for the raw power of voice and body. The theater becomes a time machine — as nostalgic as it is revolutionary.

"We were born in the middle of the spectrum of vibrations. Bones became flutes,  arrows and bows became violins, the bones and stones may last. We depend on vibration, atoms are never on vacation. Life forms can still make music from a willow branch, from skin ,from dried intestines but the thing itself, the thing that is made to vibrate: returns to dust.  But: Dust triggers vibrations of all kind of speeds responding to slower cycles. Music connects us with this entire vibrating world. In dust we live. Our ears are demanding…. Separating the wanted from the unwanted. Separating the one bird from the other. The beautiful from the random. The noise from the melody. Hearing… the last of our senses deeply linked by ‘the heart’, by fear and pleasure, by arrow and bow, by touch and resonance; We may mold music, but music molds us. Our voices, those vibrations from within ourselves, are the very source of all , the middle of the spectrum, the X and Y of all our actions. Arrow and bow, zoef, and go. There is no point to let go everything at once, it is much more beautiful as one thing triggers something else…  and something else can start gently…trigger - ping. Each individual sound is contributing to the whole. In listening there is a revolution.

- Louise van den Eede (extract from A REVUE)

Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe (25) created a sublime and spectacular event that will be remembered for a long time. ★★★★

- De Standaard 2020

A Revue delivers compelling musical theater that is moving and funny at times. ★★★★

– Klara, October 15, 2020

The opera has never sounded or looked as fresh and fruity as in A Revue. (...) His direction is as fresh as a first crocus, his choice of songs is engaging and demonstrates an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the opera repertoire. ★★★★

– Els Van Steenberghe in Knack Focus, October 18, 2020

A Revue by Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe, with Louise van den Eede as dramaturge and 'librettist', is a stunning performance. A group of more than 25 performers, scenographers, costume designers, musicians and sculptors put their shoulders to the wheel of this project on the edge of the established circuits. But even more amazing is the energy and panache with which the group taps into the revolutionary and erotic potential of (opera) music.

– Pieter T'Jonck in Pzazz, October 17, 2020

"The story of A Revue is transforming in a way that I hope opera and ballet will transform. The word revue is French for 'revised'. I'm not averse to the old but convinced of the power and poetry of change. And if it's true that we don't live in times of change, but in change of time, then I am an inhabitant of an era in which anything and everything is possible. My ambition is not to create a new order or to give a new overview, but to show the richness of what can be connected with each other. A future is fertile."
